Life, Lately #1
Long weekends always arrive like a gift and disappear like a ghost. I had big plans to be productive. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t. But it was a great weekend anyway—messy hair and all.
Friday night, kicked things off with a semi-virtuous swim at the AC Baths. I got there a bit early and did a couple of laps in the lane pool while waiting for my friend, Mia. When she arrived, we made a beeline for the hot leisure pools because let’s be honest—we're more float-and-chat than swim-laps types.
Later, we headed back to my place where I whipped up garlic buttered shrimps. We plopped on the couch and watched Made of Honor. We honestly had the best time—laughing, commenting on the over-the-top moments, and shamelessly enjoying every cheesy scene. There’s just something about a classic rom-com that hits the spot, especially when shared with a good friend and a full plate.
Saturday was peak domestic bliss-slash-chaos. You know the kind: fresh laundry half-folded, dishes glaring at me from across the kitchen, and me swanning around in comfy clothes pretending I was “being productive.” After getting through the laundry and folding, John and I declared the rest of the day a write-off and dove into some good old-fashioned Warcraft. Sometimes the most responsible thing you can do is ignore the vacuum and go defend your digital realm.
We cooked squid adobo for dinner—a classic Filipino comfort dish simmered in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and spices. Tangy, savory, and absolutely delicious. A win is a win.
Sunday rolled in gently, and with it came the usual quiet invitation to pause. We went to Mass at Tongariro Church—something about carving out that hour each week help us reset. It’s become a space for reflection, for checking in with one's self and letting the noise of the week settle.
Afterwards, John and I wandered over to Market Central (held every Sunday by the Taupō lakefront), where our appetites made all the decisions. We shared a juicy burger, grabbed some perfectly charred skewers straight off the grill, and topped it all off with a rich hot chocolate because, well—balance. It wasn’t so much brunch as it was a full-on taste tour. A live band was also playing, which made everything feel a bit like a scene from a movie I wish I was in more often.
We popped into Farmers next where I indulged in a little retail therapy and bought a new mascara. Heard that if your lashes got volume, your problems are at least 10% smaller. It’s science.
Dinner was wonderfully low-effort but full of comfort—we made salmon sinigang soup, all tangy and warm, the kind of dish that wraps around you like a hug. We ended the night with a couple of Gilmore Girls episodes, as nothing quite captures the spirit of a quiet Sunday like comfort food and small-town drama.
Monday, sweet Monday. The King’s Birthday let us hit snooze on reality for just a little longer. We kicked things off in true holiday spirit—with frozen pizza for breakfast (10/10, would do again). John got a couple of hours of work done on his computer while I fully committed to being gloriously unproductive. Eventually, we made our way to our favourite Vietnamese Joint for steaming bowls of beef soup and fresh rice paper rolls. Still convinced that broth is one of the top things to ever happen to humankind.
We walked it off lakeside in that slow, post-late-lunch daze. It was more of a “point at ducks” walk than a power stroll. The weather was kind. The ducks were feisty.
Later in the afternoon, we went back to the AC Baths. I swam a few more laps, partly to justify the delicious food I’d just devoured, and mostly to pretend I’m the kind of person who earns her meals with cardio. After that, we melted into the leisure pools and just stayed there—floating, chatting, and doing handstands underwater.
Dinner was an easy mishmash of leftovers: shrimps from Friday, squid from Saturday, soup from Sunday. A bit like the weekend itself—a mismatched but comforting little collection of moments, shared and slow.
